OUR Leadership Curriculum:
Regional Institute for Health and Environmental Leadership: http://rihel.org is affiliated with the National Public Health Leadership Development Network (http://www.slu/edu/organizations.nln). The Advanced Leadership Training Program provides education in collaborative leadership and other leadership models to enhance the effectiveness of professionals working in the areas of health and environment. The mission of the Institute is to promote leadership development for current and emerging leaders in the health and environment professions in the public and the private sectors of the Rocky Mountain region. Support for this Leadership Program comes from tuition and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Region VIII plus several local foundations. Faculty from the UCHSC and the University of Denver participate as instructors in the program. The program trains 45 fellows per year.
Kathy I. Kennedy, DrPH, the director of RIHEL, serves as the principle consultant to the CU-LEADS Scholars program, developing and implementing the leadership curriculum.
OUR On-line Health Policy Module:
Directed by Dr. Steve Federico consists of a web-based legislative advocacy exercise with 3 group sessions (2 hours each) and 2 sessions on media advocacy (2 hours each).
Topics include:
• Media Advocacy: Use the broadcast and print media to advocate the objectives or activities of a community organization.
• Dialogue on Leadership Research: Appreciate that modern leadership research and non-fiction biographies offer insights for community health leaders which will enable them to bring community organizations to higher levels of effectiveness.
• Legislative advocacy: Through a web-based exercise and small group sessions students will participate in a simulation to review the legislative process, read a bill, write a legislative fact sheet, work with a coalition, negotiate and compromise to pass legislation, develop a media strategy, and mobilize grass roots upport.
